My setting will be at my house. I will be serving a nice field green salad tossed in a viniagrette dressing with a nice glass of sauvignon blanc to start us off with. For the main course it will be a medium cooked filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and fresh green beans served with a glass of pinot noir. Last for dessert will will be having fried cheese cake topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream with a glass of riesling. My guest include Elvis, Abraham Lincoln, my mom, Amanda (niece), Katja, and David.
Me: Welcome everyone and thankyou for attending my dinner party. I hope everyone has brought their appetite with them because we have plenty of food to go around the table.

Historical Fiction consists of different types of books in which the setting, scene, and characters take place in the past. Some might have real people and places but the main characters in the story are usually fictional.
Historical Fiction would be fun to use in social studies or history classes. I would take a fun story book like "The Thanksgiving Story" and have some kids dressup as indians and the others as pilgrims so they can act out a scene from the book. I would also have them make their own cornucopia with construction paper and markers so they can hang them around the classroom. I think historical fiction is fun to read and can be used in many other different ways.

So my "How To" is going to be a recipe on how to make a perfect surpreme pizza. I'm glad I took home economics is high school because this is one of the foods I learned to make in class. So first we start with the ingredients to the crust.
1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
1 1/2 cup of warm water
a dash of salt
1 tablespoon of olive oil
3 1/2 cups of flour
In a large mixing bowl, combine all of your ingredients. You can start by mixing it all with a spatula and then start working it all together with your hands to form a big ball of dough. If the dough still fills a little sticky to your hands, then just add a little more flour. Next you will make two incisions on top of the dough making sure they cross like the letter "x". This is done so when the dough is finished rising, you know where to cut it. After make sure you have the dough in the mixing bowl and with a towel cover the top of the bowl so the dough can rise. You will need to do this for 30 minutes.
After the 30 minutes have passed then you are ready to roll out your dough and add your prefered topping to it. It's time to cut the dough where you have marked your "x". Your dough is going to make three 12 inch pizza crusts. On your work surface lightly spread some flour so you are able to roll out your dough with a rolling pin. Roll out your crust about 12 inches in diameter and place it on a non stick pizza pan.
Now you are ready to add your toppings. Mine include sauce, lots of cheese, pepperoni's, green and red peppers, japs (jalepenos), olives, and meat. After you have added all your toppings you are going to cook your pizza on 450 degrees for 20-30 minutes or until your crust is brown from the bottom. Now you are ready to enjoy your perfect surpreme pizza.

Contemporary realistic fiction means that everything in the story from characters, plots and settings can be found in real life. It doesn't have magical powers or vampires in the story. It deals with real life situations such as divorce, rape, friendship, family, and sometimes death.
This can be very helpful in the classroom because some students might be going through some of these situations and a good thing to have is books on this genre so the students can be informed on whats going on and they won't be confused.

Narrative writing tells a story that can be true, made up, or a fantasy story. It has a sequence of events that happen over time. What's most important in narrative writing is that it portrays a crystal clear beginning, middle, and end. You have to make sure when talking about the middle part that you clearly describe all of the other parts as well. Narrative writing also has an audience other than the writer.
I really enjoyed the writers workshop experience. I was just a little nervous at first to read my poem to my group, but I was happy after I did because I got positive feedback and great suggestions from them.
The process of writers workshop:
1. You are put in a group with 3-5 students in a circle
2. The first person will read their paper aloud to their group
3. The group members will comment on the paper. This is where the sandwich theory comes to use
Tell the person what you liked about their paper
Ask questions or give some suggestions/ maybe word choice
Give a positive statement/ there is no editing such as capitalization or punctuation
Be sure to talk about characters and the development of the events
4. After everyone has had a turn reading their paper, then go back individually and rewrite
5. Edit

Modern fantasy is all make believe. It usually takes place in an imaginative world where creatures and animals can talk. What so fun about modern fantasy is that readers can take their imagination and mind inside their book and pretend that they are there. The book I chose for a fun activity is JUMANJI, also known as a movie.
Since the book is about a board game that comes to life, I thought it would be fun to have the students get into groups and makeup their own board game. The teacher would bring materials such as markers, crayons, scissors, construction paper, glue and maybe magazines so the students can cut out pictures for the game. Then students would have to come up with rules and what kind of adventure they would want to create for their game.
At the end of each week everyone will have a chance to present their games and also have a chance to play them.

Traditional Literature is a genre that consists of stories that include fairytale, folktale, legends, fables, tall tales and myths that have been passed down for generations from differnt cultures.
A way to use traditional literature in the classroom is storytelling. I know that many teachers have a magic carpet in their classroom to gather around and read a story to the class. Many children love to listen to stories especially when they have an evil villian or a prince and princess in it. Another fun way to use it in the classroom is act out a story or play. The teacher can always bring some props for the students to dressup in and have them do an act in front of the class.
I would definitly use traditional literature in my classroom. I think that it would be fun for the students because they can use their imagination but also fun for the teacher because he/she can see all the different ideas that kids come up with .

To me the definition of talk to is converse and communicate with others as well as exchanging different ideas.
I think that talk is benificial in the classrooms because it gives students a way to express themselves and speak freely. When listening to others talk, you gain more knowledge and information that you might have not known about.
Some examples of talk in the classroom would be class discussions, group activities, or acting out scenes from a book or play. I think that talk is important for students in the classroom and that teachers should be able to ignite conversations and ask questions.

To me a picture book tells it's own story. I think it communicates through it's pictures whether it has words or not. We can use picture books in many ways. I would use a picture book to read aloud to my class or just have them look at the pictures and let them make up their own stories to the book. But we do have to be careful when choosing picture books for your students. Some ways to evaluate picture books are to get information on the author, make sure the pictures are going to be interesting to the students and that they are not to violent and graphic for them. Always have your students in mind when selecting books for them.
I enjoy picture books. I don't think that there's an age where your to young or old for picture books. There are many lesson plans and activities that can be created using these types of books. Overall I like picture books.

Listening is a complex, interactive process by which spoken language is converted to meaning. There are four different types of listening and I think I use each one everyday. The first type is called discriminative. Usually this is your pick or choose based on interest. A example would be that in school when the teacher is lecturing to the class everything the teacher might say is important but you only might want to remember or write down the things that are important to you.
Another type of listening is aesthetic. This type is usually for fun and pleasure. I think I use this one the most because everyday I watch t.v and it's for fun and my own enjoyment.
The third type is called efferent. This one is kind of hard for me. This type is used for information. I can say I use this one when I am taking notes in class or watching the news to see the weather.
Last we have critical listening. This is used for debating and listening carefully. I also use this at school when the teacher is assigning homework or instructions to a assignment.
The most challenging part of our debate I think was trying to listen to what everyone had to say. It was hard because everyone was talking at the same time and I wasn't able to hear what my team or the other team said at times. I did have fun though, and I think that we used all the four types of listening in this project.
The most important teacher talk to me was "Remember the first week when we had to really work at walking quietly? Now you guys do it automatically." I think this is important because when we teach students something it's good to go back and see if they can remember that way we can get their attention and see if they are actually learning it or not. I can recall doing this in elementary school when we had fire drills.

3321 BlogEntry #4 International Lit.
International Literature is known as different books that have been published in a different country and language and then re-published in the United States and in the english language. Multicultural literature differs from International because it mostly deals with different types of cultures, beliefs, and values. I think it is important in the classroom because we are going to have students that come from different cultures and different places around the world, so it's good to teach these types of literature to them. Here are a few activities for multicultural and international literature for the classroom.
1). International Lit./ I would bring two of the same books but have one of them in a different language ( Cinderella) and have the students compare and contrast the two. Maybe have them make a venn diagram and make sure they include the characters and settings. 2). After that I will let students be creative and have them draw their favorite character.
2). Multicultural Lit./ We would have a class discussion about different cultural families and how they live. I would ask students to bring a picture of their family and then write a short paragraph on about how special their family is. 2). I would take a map with different countries on it and a list of holidays those countries celebrate and have the students compare them to the holidays that we celebrate here in the U.S.

To effectively evaluate books for children you first have to make sure you pick a book that is right for the age group. We don't want to pick a book that is at a higher or lower standard for the children because than they won't understand it. The story or book you pick out has to be good and interesting so make sure you read it first. Also see if it has a good setting, characters, and ending. We as teachers have to make sure what kind of books we put in our classrooms.
I think that this is value-based because we might like a book and want to read it in our classroom, but we also have to think about the parents of our students and what they would think about it. I think that parents and teachers think differently so we have to be careful because some parents might not want their children to exposed to certain things and thats where values and traditions come in.
Character/setting analysis is important because it's what makes the book or story interesting. If this was not a part of the book it would probably be boring. This is what gets the children into the book to see if they are going to like it or not and it's also for them to better understand what they are reading.

There are five key features of the reading process. Starting with the first stage is
Stage 1: Prereading
activate or build background knowledge
set purposes for reading
preview the text
Stage 2:Reading
shared reading
guided reading
independent reading
buddy reading
reading aloud
Stage3: Responding
writing in reading logs/journals
grand conversations
activities
Stage4: Exploring
re-reading the selection
examine authors craft
focusing on new vocabulary words
participating in mini lessons
Stage5: Applying
continue to deepen interpretation and value
the reading expierence
projects
social justice
research
The writing process consists of the following:
1.Prewriting-
brainstorming
outlining- This is used to organize your thoughts. ex: number outline and graphic organizer
discussion
2. Drafting-
writing a rough draft
mark writings on the rough draft
students will emphasize content rather than mechanics
3. Revising
read your own writing
share writings in writing groups
participate in discussions about classmate's writings
make changes in your own compositions
make substantive rather than minor changes
4. Editing
proof read your own compostions
help proofread classmates compositions as well
identify and correct your own mechanical errors
meet with teacher for final editing
5. Publishing
make final copy of your writing usually using word processing
publish writing in appropriate form
sit in author's chair and show your writing
I was introduced to the writing process back in middle school in my English classes. I remember going over and doing all of the key features that were mentioned for the writing process. I think it helped a great deal wth the English papers I had to write as well as with the TAAS testing that we had. I don't remember ever having to retake the writing part of the TAAS test and I think this is why.

Chapter 4 was mainly about how children learn to read and write. There were different demonstrations from teachers on reading and writing, interactive writing and other teaching strategies. Some of the activities were shared reading, minilessons and cross-age reading buddies.
Shared Reading-
1. Teachers introduce the book, read the title, show the front cover to the students, and then the students will make predictions about what will happen.
2. The teacher will read the book aloud and keep the students interested by using dramatic reading style and encourage students to chime in on words they know and reconize.
3. Students respond to the book by drawing and writing in reading logs and sharing their responses with others.
4. Students then reread the book and take turns turning the pages
5. Teachers continue to reread the book to the children over a period of several days
6. After the children become familiar with the text the teacher then gives the children individual copies of the book for them to read independently
Minilessons-
Teachers teach minilessons about written language concepts and other reading topics starting in kindergarten and goes through the primary grades. I think that mini lessons are very important in the classroom because children learn how reading and writing can be used and it also shows how children behave as readers and writers.
Cross-Age Reading Buddies-
This is just another way to use shared reading in kindergarten and first grade. Cross-age reading buddies are when upper grade students are paired up with emergent students and they become reading buddies. I think that this is a great idea because it helps kids learn how to work with either older or younger kids then them. I also like it because the children can share personal experiences from the books they read, talk about different reading strategies, and maybe their favorite author. It's like having a big brother or little sister in a way and it's important to have it in the classroom.

It is said that long before recorded history, families and many different tribes shared their traditions and values through stories that were told around campfires. Many of these people developed mythologies and tales to tell to their children about dramatic heroes, personified animals, and witty tricksters. Back then, many tales that were told through oral tradition and early books were not written for children. For example, Charles Perrault published a book called Contes de ma Mere l Oye ( Tales of Mother Goose) which you would think it was like the book today with rhymes, but instead it had known fairy tales such as "Cinderella", "Sleeping Beauty", and "Little Red Riding Hood". He did not create these tales but retold them from the French oral tradition.
When people finally realize that childhood was a very special part in life, literature written for children became very important. Changes in printing technology provided affortable books, but most important they were made for children to read. Perrault was one of the first writers to reconize that fairy tales had a special place in the world for children.
I think that this is very important because if we didn't have literature for children how or what will they read? There are many different types of books out there to grab children's attention and interest but they just have to be introduced to them and we as future teachers have that advantage to do it.

There are many different ways that students learn. One way that is described in the book by Jean Piaget is that they interact with as well as adapt to their enviornment. He believes that they gain knowledge and learn from their experiences. I agree with this because I know that I have to be comfortable in my enviornment in order for me to learn better and of course i think I gain more knowledge from my own experiences. Who doesn't? Students also learn from remembering different strategies. Repeating different information over and over in their head they are using a strategy called rehearsal. This will help them remember words and definitions if they are preparing for a spelling test or any other kind of test. Other strategies include: predicting, organizing, elaborating, and monitoring. Using these different strategies students are able to obtain more information to help them.

To me a value is something you believe in and is something that has moral worth. It's the way you live your life and your values are the things you go by in your life.My most important value is my family. I guess since I come from a large family my whole world revolves around them. They have always been there for me and have supported any decisions I've made, whether right or wrong and thats why I put them first. I'm sure I've learned this at home. I don't think it was taught to me but I just picked it up like a habit. Can I teach this value? Yes to my children when I have some. I would want them to know how important family is but also teach them other values and let them decide which value is most important to them. I would teach them by showing how to get along with their brothers and sisters and also through family books or just spending time with the family. I don't teach it now but I do let everyone know how much my family is important to me and they can figure out that this is one of my values in life.
